2015 Vocal Masterclass with Laquita Mitchell
On February 3rd DMAB kicked off its 2015 Guest Artist Series with the amazing Soprano, Laquita Mitchell. It was a fantastic event and an experience that the DMAB kids will never forget. Ms. Mitchell began the class by singing Summertime, a song from the opera, Porgy and Bess. She explained to the kids how she landed the starring role as Bess in her performance at the Times Union Center for the Performing Arts. During the Masterclass, she shared that her love for music began at an early age because her parents always had music playing at home. Ms. Mitchell explained to the students that her voice is her instrument and how important it is that she takes care of it. She took them through voice warm-up exercises, shared her daily regiment, and how she prepares to sing for hours on stage. During the class she worked one-on-one with a student who was preparing for a vocal audition at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in that same week. It was amazing to hear the difference in the student’s voice after Ms. Mitchell worked with her on voice techniques. She also allowed the kids to ask questions and encouraged them to Dream Big! Laquita Mitchell is indeed a caring artist who takes the time to give back.
