DMAB’s Conversations with Legends will bring you up close and personal with celebrities Alexander Smalls and Alfre Woodard.
Don’t Miss A Beat is a Black Owned Arts non-profit organization in Jacksonville whose mission is to utilize musical theatre production and community engagement as tools to enlighten and activate youth of color.
As part of that mission, Don’t Miss a Beat shares unique experiences with and introduces individual masters within the performing arts community to its students. The organization’s “Conversations with Legends” series will create an invaluable opportunity for Don’t Miss A Beat participants and the Northeast Florida community to engage with celebrity talent on a more personal level. During each conversation, speakers will share stories from their lives and empower the next generation with the wisdom and motivation necessary to change the world.
This year, Don’t Miss A Beat will honor celebrity chef, author, and restaurateur Alexander Smalls for his enduring commitment to mentorship. Throughout his tenure, Smalls has advised some of the most dynamic minds in the music, theatre, television, and culinary industries. Countless talented artists from across the globe have sought counsel from Smalls regarding how to create sustainable careers, live life with a mission, and gain a seat at the table where impactful decisions are being made.
Smalls has mentored Ulysses Owens Jr., Artistic Director of Don’t Miss A Beat, for the last ten years.
In celebration of Smalls, Don’t Miss A Beat is honored to welcome his dear friend, Actress Alfre Woodard. The recipient of four Primetime Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and nominations for an Academy Award and two Grammy Awards, Woodard will be joining Smalls for an intimate night of conversation because she believes in the work of Don’t Miss A Beat.
Please join Don’t Miss A Beat on February 26th at the historic Ritz Theater in celebration of Black History Month for what is sure to be an incredible Conversations with Legends event. The evening, which will be celebrated in two parts, will begin with entertainment from Don’t Miss A Beat students and remarks from Smalls and Woodard. Following the event, there will be a sponsors reception featuring hors d’oeuvres by Celebrity Chef Kenny Gilbert.
